AREA CALCULATION

NEW TURF GUIDE CALCU.jpg

OVAL AREA

 3.14 MULTIPLIED BY

A) THE LONGEST SIDE DIVIDED BY 2

B) THE SHORTEST SIDE DIVIDED BY 2

EQUATION = 3.14 X A X B = AREA M2

THE AREA OF SHAPE CAN BE DETERMINED BY SIMPLY BREAKING THE SHAPE INTO SQUARES, RECTANGLES OR TRIANGLES - CALCULATE EACH SECTION AND ADD THEM UP FOR TOTAL M2 AREA REQUIRED.

SOIL PREPARATION

 NEW TURF REMOVING WASTE.jpg

REMOVE ALL WASTE, ROCKS, OLD LAWN & WEEDS, DEAD LAWN AND WEEDS WILL HINDER YOUR NEW TURF ROOTS FROM ESTABLISHING INTO THE UNDER SOIL.

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE KIKUYA, IT IS BEST TO SPRAY WITH ROUNDUP AS IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE ALL THE RUNNERS WHICH WILL POP UP LATER ON.

IF YOUR SOIL IS A CLAY BASE WE RECOMMEND DIGGING IN GYPSUM TO HELP BREAK DOWN THE CLAY BEFORE SPREADING UNDER SOIL SO THE TURF ROOTS CAN GROW THROUGH THIS LAYER.

APPLYING UNDER SOIL

NEW TURF UNDERSOIL C.jpg  NEW TURF UNDERSOIL D.jpg NEW TURF UNDERSOIL B.jpg  NEW TURF STARTER FERTILISER.jpg

THE MOST OVER LOOKED STAGE OF TURFING, A PROPER BASE FOR YOUR TURF CAN SAVE YOU COUNTLESS $ IN DEAD TURF IF NOT PREPARED CORRECTLY, WE RECOMMEND USING THE HIGHEST QUALITY UNDER/OVER TURF SOIL. THIS WILL NOT COMPRESS AND HAS THE BASIC NUTRIENTS TO HELP ESTABLISH YOUR NEW LAWN.

SPREAD THE UNDER SOIL EVENLY OVER THE ENTIRE AREA USING A SOIL SPREADER, IF CLOSE TO A HOUSE/PATIO SLIGHTLY ANGLE THE SOIL DOWNWARDS AWAY SO ANY WATER CAN DRAIN AWAY FROM THESE STRUCTURES.

GENTLY WATER DOWN THE SOIL READY FOR LAYING TURF, FOR PEACE OF MIND WE DO RECOMMEND SPREADING "SIR LAUNCHER" STARTER FERTILISER FIRST TO HELP BOOST ROOT GROWTH.

LAYING TURF

NEW TURF BOARDS ON TURF.jpg NEW TURF TRIMMING TURF.jpg  NEW TURF SPRINKLER.jpg   NEW TURF LAWN ROLLING.jpg

ONCE YOUR TURF HAS ARRIVED IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO LAY IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT DRYING OUT OR WORSE "PALLET BURN".

START LAYING YOUR TURF FROM THE LOWEST SECTION FIRST AND COMPLETE THE OUTLINE OF THE AREA, FILL IN THE SECTION USING A BRICK WORK PATTERN, ON STEEP SECTIONS LAY THE TURF ACROSS THE SLOPE RATHER THAN DOWN THE SLOPE.

IF LAYING LARGE AREAS IT PAYS TO HAVE SPRINKLERS GOING ON SECTIONS ALREADY LAID TO PREVENT DRYING OUT BEFORE YOU FINISH THE JOB.

USE PLANKS OF WOOD TO STEP ON WHICH HELPS SPREAD YOUR LOAD RATHER THAN WALKNG, KNEELING ON THE NEW TURF CAUSING DEPRESSIONS.

BUTT THE SLABS UP AGAINST EACH OTHER TRYING NOT TO LEAVE GAPS BETWEEN EACH OTHER, DON'T OVERLAY THE TURF AS THIS WILL DRY OUT.

TRIM UP WITH ANY SHARP KNIFE/BLADE WHILE TRYING NOT TO HAVE ANY VERY SMALL PIECES AS THESE WILL DRY OUT FASTER AND DIE.

ONCE YOU HAVE FINISHED LAYING USE TOP DRESSING SOIL TO FILL IN ANY DEPRESSIONS, AROUND THE EDGES AND BETWEEN THE TURF SLABS AND A LIGHT SCATTERING OVER THE REST TO HELP RETAIN MOISTURE.

NOW SOAK THE TURF AND CHECK THAT WATER IS REACHING THE UNDER SOIL BY GENTLY LIFTING CORNERS OF THE SLABS AND LOOKING UNDERNEATH.

FINALLY USE A LAWN ROLLER TO HELP LEVEL , REMOVE AIR POCKETS AND PRESS THE TURF ROOTS DOWN FOR FULL CONTACT WITH THE UNDER SOIL.

TURF CARE

NEW TURF SPRINKLER.jpg  NEW TURF MOWING.jpg  NEW TURF SPRINKLER.jpg  NEW TURF FERTILISING.jpg

WATERING IN THE TURF FOR THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS IS CRUCIAL, IN LATE SPRING & SUMMER THE TURF MAY NEED TO BE WATERED TWICE A DAY TO KEEP MOIST.

AFTER THE LAWN HAS BEEN DOWN A COUPLE OF WEEKS IT CAN BE MOWED, JUST SKIM THE TOP HIGHER THAN NORMALLY MOWED, DO NOT SCALP/DEEP CUT AS THIS WILL EXPOSE THE NEWLY FORMING ROOTS AND DRY/KILL THEM.

TURF GENERALLY TAKES A FEW MONTHS TO SETTLE IN, CONTINUE WATERING & GENTLY MOWING TO KEEP IT STIMULATED TO GROW.

BY NOW YOU CAN CONSIDER FERTILISING WITH SIR WALTER FERTILISER TO GIVE IT AN EXTRA BOOST. (NOTE, DO NOT OVER FERTILISE AS THIS CAN STRESS OUT NEWLY GROWING TURF), AS WITH EVERY FERTILISER READ THE INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED.

IF YOU NOTICE MOTHS FLYING AROUND YOUR LAWN AS YOU WALK OVER IT OR AN ABUNDANCE OF MOTHS/BEETLES

FLYING AROUND OUTSIDE LIGHTS THEN THIS IS A SURE SIGN THAT YOUR LAWN IS UNDER ATTACK, TRY TO

IDENTIFY THE PEST AND TREAT WITH A SUITABLE PESTICIDE.

 LAWN PROBLEMS

NEW TURF PROB PALLET BURN.jpg

PALLET BURN THIS IS CAUSED BY LEAVING THE SLABS ON THE PALLET TOO LONG,

RESULTING IN THE CENTRE OF THE PILE  HEATING UP. WHEN YOU LAY THE TURF

HALF MOONS APPEAR WHERE THE TURF HAS COOKED AND DIED.

HAS TO BE REPLACED AS WILL NOT GROW BACK.

 NEW TURF PROB BROWN PATCH.jpg

BROWN PATCH A FUNGAL DISEASE FOUND IN WARM, WET CONDITIONS

PRODUCING PATCHES (USUALLY WITH A GREY SMOKY OUTER RING).

LEAVES HAVE THIN BROWN EDGES, YELLOW SPOTS & LESIONS.

CAUSED BY THE MYCELIUM FUNGUS, TREAT WITH MANCOZEB FUNGICIDE

AND AVOID EVENING WATERING.

 NEW TURF PROB ANTHRACNOSE.jpg

ANTHRACNOSE A FUNGAL DISEASE FOUND DURING WARM, HUMID CONDITIONS.

INFECTED AREAS ARE REDDISH BROWN TURNING TO YELLOW/LIGHT BROWN.

TREAT WITH MANCOZEB FUNGICIDE.

 NEW TURF PROB DOLLAR SPOT.jpg

DOLLAR SPOT A FUNGAL DISEASE FOUND DURING WARM, HIGH HUMIDITY

CONDITIONS. (MAINLY AFFECTING SOUTHERN PARTS OF AUSTRALIA).

SMALL DOLLAR SIZED SPOTS, STARTING DARK TURNING BROWN/ LIGHT BROWN

AND EVENTUALLY ALMOST WHITE. REMOVE THATCH LAYER & APPLY HIGH NITROGEN

FERTILISER, TREAT WITH MANCOZEB FUNGICIDE AND AVOID EVENING WATERING.

 NEW TURF PROB FUSARIUM.jpg

FUSARIUM PATCH A FUNGAL DISEASE FOUND IN WARM, WET CONDITIONS.

YELLOW/BROWN PATCHES USUALLY WITH GREY/WHITE BORDERS.

REMOVE THATCH AND USE A BALANCED HIGH NITROGEN FERTILISER.

TREAT WITH MANCOZEB FUNGICIDE AND AVOID LATE ARVO/EVENING WATERING.

 NEW TURF PROB POWDERY MILDEW.jpg

POWDERY MILDEW A FUNGAL DISEASE COVERING LEAVES IN A WHITE POWDER.

MORE COMMONLY FOUND IN VEGETABLE PATCHES BUT ALSO AFFECTS GRASSES.

TREAT AS YOU WOULD VEGETABLES WITH A FUNGICIDE.

 NEW TURF PROB PYTHIUM.jpg

PYTHIUM/DROP OFF  A FUNGAL DISEASE IN HOT, HUMID CONDITIONS WHERE

POOR DRAINAGE AND DEAD AIR IS A PROBLEM.

BROWN DEAD PATCHES AND GRASS ROT SPREADING RAPIDLY.

ONLY SOLUTION IS TO IMPROVE DRAINAGE, REMOVE TREES FOR AERATION AND

TREAT WITH FUNGICIDE.

 NEW TURF PROB LEAF SPOT.jpg

LEAF SPOT  A FUNGAL DISEASE FOUND IN WARM CONDITIONS.

PURPLE/RED TO PURPLE/BROWN SPOTS ON LEAVES.

TREAT WITH MANCOZEB FUNGICIDE AND BETTER MANAGEMENT OF WATERING HELPS.

 NEW TURF PROB LEAF SPOT.jpg

MELTING OUT VERY SIMILAR TO LEAF SPOT BUT MORE NASTY.

STARTS AS SPOTS BUT MOVES DOWN TO THE ROOTS AND KILLS THE PLANT.

TREAT AS PER LEAF SPOT.

 NEW TURF PROB FAIRY RING.jpg

FAIRY RING COMES IN 3 TYPES OF FUNGAL DISEASE, THESE CAN SEVERLY DAMAGE

OR KILL YOUR LAWN. DEAD/WILTED GRASS IN CIRCULAR OR ARCING PATTERNS

USUALLY CONTAINING MUSHROOMS AND PUFF BALLS.

MYCELIUM FUNGUS LIKES TO COHABIT THIS (SEE BROWN PATCH).  OCCURS THRU

LAWNS LOW IN BOTH NUTRIENTS AND MOISTURE.

NO EFFECTIVE FUNGICIDE BUT KEEPING LAWN HEALTHY WILL HELP PREVENT THIS.

(NOTE) FAIRY RING WILL EVENTUALLY GO AWAY, REMOVAL OF AFFECTED SOIL CAN HELP.

 NEW TURF PROB RED THREAD.jpg

RED THREAD A FUNGAL DISEASE FOUND IN WARM/HOT HUMID CONDITIONS.

STARTS AS SMALL BUT GROWS TO LARGER PATCHES.

YELLOW/BROWN PATCHES WITH SMALL RED THREADS AND PINK MYCELIUM FLUFF.

COMMON IN LOW NITROGEN LAWNS.

USE A NITROGEN BASED FUNGICIDE SPECIFICALLY SUITED FOR RED THREAD, AND

DOSE WITH NITROGEN BASED FERTILISER.

NEW TURF PROB SPRING DEAD SPOT.jpg

SPRING DEAD SPOT  AFFECTS COUCH GRASS ONLY BUT IS DEADLY ON MATURE LAWNS.

APPEARS FROM AUTUMN TO SUMMER WITH COOL/WET CONDITIONS.

LAWNS WITH THICK THATCH, POOR DRAINAGE, LOW IN POTASSIUM ARE VULNERABLE.

THIS FUNGUS ROTS THE ROOTS & STOLONS CAUSING DEAD CIRCULAR PATCHES.

HAS A HABIT OF REAPPEARING IN THE SAME SPOTS EVERY YEAR.

REMOVE THATCH AND IMPROVE DRAINAGE/AERATION + USE A HIGH POTASSIUM FERTILISER.

 OTHER CULPRITS...

 NEW TURF PROB URINE BURN.jpg

DOG URINE BURN WHILE TURF REQUIRES NITROGEN, THE CONCENTRATIONS

IN DOGS URINE IS TOO MUCH CAUSING THE GRASS TO "BURN" .

WHILE WE ARE NOT GETTING IN TO DEEP WITH REMEDIES FOR YOUR DOG

THE MAIN CORRECTION IS TO REDUCE NITROGEN OUTPUT.

PROVIDE PLENTY OF WATER, ADD A HEALTHY MIXED DIET, AND EXERCISING

YOUR DOG TO BURN PROTEIN, THUS REDUCING NITROGEN CONVERSION.

NOTE: ALWAYS CONSULT A VET FOR MORE INDEPTH INFORMATION.
